Fresh spring news from Masaryk University
Dear alumni,
A few months have passed and it’s time for a next newsletter. In this issue you can read the stories of fellow Masaryk Uni graduates, see what's happening to the Scala cinema, find out how Brno is becoming more cosmopolitan, and feel the atmosphere of the university in spring through photos. Moreover, don't forget to register for yet another alumni reunion and meet us and others at the end of June during a BBQ.

Ten years after graduating from Masaryk University, Canadian Dale Kalina returned to Brno to reminisce about his studies at the Faculty of Medicine. The infectious diseases specialist, who appeared almost daily in the Canadian media during the pandemic, also met with MU students.

News from the Masaryk University

It is estimated that as many as 2 million Czech compatriots live in various parts of the world. Many were born abroad and have never known the Czech Republic. A newly launched programme for compatriots aims to attract them to Masaryk University, allowing them to get to know the country of their ancestors.

On Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022, a pulse of intense radiation swept through the solar system so exceptional that astronomers quickly dubbed it the BOAT – the brightest of all time.

For the first time outside the continent and straight to the snowy Czech Republic. For New Zealand law student Joycintta Lavemaau, her three weeks spent at the MU Winter School was a great experience, which she will pass on to other students through her work.

The Academic Senate of Masaryk University elected the new Rector of Masaryk University in the first round of voting. There was just one candidate – the current MU Rector Martin Bareš, who thus won his second term of office beginning on 1 September 2023.

The number of foreign residents is continuing to increase in Brno, as in the rest of the Czech Republic, driven by a combination of the increasing number of international companies, free movement within the EU, and Brno’s character as a university city.

From 1 May, Brno shared bikes scheme is returning to welcome the beginning of the cycling season. Following last year’s pilot project, shared bikes will be available for free from Rekola or Nextbike twice a day
